Eastern Europe Construction Market: Opportunities and Growth in 2024
The Eastern Europe construction market has seen significant expansion over the past decade, driven by infrastructure modernization, increased foreign investment, and urban development projects. The region's unique position as a bridge between Western Europe and Asia presents a range of opportunities for the construction sector, making it one of the most promising markets in Europe. In this article, we will explore the key factors influencing the construction market in Eastern Europe, emerging trends, and future growth prospects for 2024 and beyond.
1. Market Overview
Eastern Europe’s construction market covers a wide array of sectors, including residential, commercial, infrastructure, and industrial construction. Countries such as Poland, Hungary, Romania, and the Czech Republic are among the key players driving the region’s construction industry forward. In recent years, several factors have contributed to this growth:
Economic Growth: Eastern Europe has experienced steady economic expansion, which has fostered demand for new construction projects. Increased household income and urbanization have created a higher need for residential and commercial buildings.
EU Investments: European Union funding plays a vital role in infrastructure development across Eastern Europe, particularly in transportation and energy projects. This funding aims to improve the region's connectivity and competitiveness, enhancing the overall business climate.
Urbanization: Rapid urbanization, particularly in capital cities like Warsaw, Prague, and Bucharest, has spurred demand for housing, office spaces, and retail complexes. Developers are meeting this demand with large-scale construction projects.
2. Key Sectors in Eastern Europe’s Construction Market
a. Residential Construction
Residential construction remains one of the fastest-growing sectors, driven by a housing shortage in many countries. High demand for affordable housing in urban areas is pushing both local and international developers to invest heavily in this sector. In addition, the increasing interest in sustainable and energy-efficient buildings is shaping new residential projects.
b. Infrastructure Projects
Massive infrastructure development projects are transforming Eastern Europe’s landscape. Governments, supported by EU funding, are focusing on transportation networks, including highways, railways, and airports, to improve regional connectivity. Countries like Romania and Bulgaria are actively working on large-scale infrastructure projects to enhance trade and tourism.
c. Commercial Real Estate
Commercial construction, including office buildings, shopping malls, and hotels, is also booming. As international businesses expand into Eastern Europe, cities like Warsaw and Prague are experiencing a surge in demand for modern office spaces. The growing tourism sector has also stimulated hotel construction, especially in tourist-heavy destinations such as Budapest and Prague.
d. Industrial Construction
The region's strategic location as a logistics hub between Western Europe and Asia is fostering growth in industrial construction. Many international companies are setting up manufacturing and distribution facilities in Eastern Europe due to its competitive labor costs, strategic location, and improving infrastructure.
3. Emerging Trends in Eastern Europe’s Construction Industry
a. Sustainability and Green Construction
Sustainability has become a central theme in the construction market, with governments and developers alike prioritizing eco-friendly buildings. The EU’s green transition agenda has accelerated the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy sources, and sustainable building materials. Eastern Europe is expected to see a rise in green-certified buildings in the coming years.
b. Smart Cities and Digitalization
With the rise of smart city initiatives, Eastern Europe is incorporating digital technologies into urban development. Smart buildings, automated infrastructure, and advanced energy management systems are becoming more prevalent. These technologies are improving the efficiency and sustainability of urban areas, making cities more attractive to both businesses and residents.
c. Foreign Investment
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Eastern Europe’s construction market continues to grow. International construction firms and real estate investors are drawn to the region due to its lower costs compared to Western Europe and its potential for high returns. This influx of capital is fueling further expansion in the construction sector.
4. Challenges Facing the Market
Despite the positive outlook, the Eastern European construction market faces several challenges:
Labor Shortages: A lack of skilled workers is a significant issue, particularly in fast-growing markets like Poland and Hungary. Many countries are grappling with labor shortages, driving up wages and slowing down project timelines.
Regulatory Barriers: Varying regulations between countries can complicate cross-border projects, making it harder for international companies to enter the market. Understanding local legal frameworks is crucial for navigating these complexities.
Material Costs: Rising material costs, driven by global supply chain disruptions, can impact the profitability of construction projects. Companies are increasingly turning to local suppliers and adopting modular construction techniques to mitigate these costs.
5. Future Outlook for 2024 and Beyond
The Eastern European construction market is expected to grow steadily in the coming years. Key growth drivers include:
EU Funding Continuation: Ongoing EU funding for infrastructure and energy projects will continue to be a critical factor in the market's growth. The European Green Deal, with its focus on sustainability and renewable energy, will further shape construction practices across the region.
Foreign Investment: As more international investors look towards Eastern Europe for opportunities, the region is poised to see a rise in large-scale construction projects. In particular, the logistics, commercial, and industrial sectors are likely to attract significant capital in 2024.
Urban Development: Urbanization trends will continue to drive demand for housing, office spaces, and retail complexes, especially in major cities. Countries like Poland and Romania are likely to see robust growth in their urban construction sectors.

Far From Home Ch.3
"What's with the glasses?" MJ asks when Peter pull the case out of his bag and opens it.
"Huh? I dunno...Dad gave them to me when he dropped me off at the airport." He slips them on and reads the note Tony left on the case. "Say Edith?" The glasses activate and Peter blinks. "Whoa."
As Edith explains her functions to him, Peter looks toward Ned and Betty and their text screens pop up. They were texting how much they missed each other even though they were sitting right next to each other. Their relationship was extremely...gross. It was another thing he hoped he never found himself guilty of with Cassie.
"You have a text message from Cassie Lang. Shall I open it?" The AI asks and Peter's eyes widen.
"No no no! Dad will know!"
"Mr. Stark already knows about your relationship with Miss Lang."
Peter throws his hands up. "Of course he does! Does Mom know too?"
"Not that I'm aware."
"Well that's something I guess."
Peter takes off the glasses and puts them away as Michelle gives him a curious look and he slumps in his seat. He should have known that keeping the relationship secret would be damn near impossible with his father. Tony wouldn't have actively asked or looked for evidence but it could have been something as simple as FRIDAY letting it slip. Peter was just a little surprised that the engineer kept it to himself instead of telling Stephen as soon as he found out.
"Dad knows about me and Cassie."
MJ snorts. "Are you really surprised?"
"No. I guess not."
Their bus stops for a bathroom break and the driver stops him when he steps off and points toward an open doorway where he finds someone waiting. They disappear from sight and he makes his way into the building to find a woman who immediately demands he take his clothes off. Peter freezes up until the woman hands him a black suit and again demands he gets undressed, and hesitantly relents. Of course that's when his classmate Brad walks in on him with his pants down and chases after him when the other teen snaps a picture with his phone. Peter zips up his pants and catches up with Brad and yells to him to get him to stop.
"That totally wasn't what it looked like!"
"You don't need to explain Peter. I get if you want to hook up with a European chick, but I know you want to get with MJ so I have to show her the truth." Brad says.
Peter gapes and stammers. "I don't want to get with MJ! I have a girlfriend man!"
Brad gives him a look of confusion before returning to the bus and Peter returns to it himself after getting everything with the lady that gave him the suit settled. After accidently calling in a drone to eliminate Brad when he was trying to get Edith to delete the picture from his phone (he did not want that ending up on social media), and having to take care if said drone, successfully had the picture deleted and sat back quietly for the rest of the ride. When they finally made it to their hotel in Prague, they were taken to a really nice hotel that Tony would definitely approve of. It was a huge upgrade from the one they stayed in while in Venice.
His cell phone vibrates and he answers it, Maria Hill giving him directions before promptly hanging up just as Ned walks over.
"I just wanted to apologize if it seems like I'm focusing on my relationship with Betty."
"No. It's all cool. Don't worry about it." Peter says as a reassurance.
"So where's this fire monster going to appear?" The darker male asks.
"Uhh...here. In the city."
"What?! You have to do something Peter! We're all counting on you!"
No pressure, Peter thought as his best friend rejoined the group. He leaves when they're given free time to settle and makes his way to the location Fury and Hill told him about and zones out while the adults talk about this and that. They had told him the plan as soon as he arrived and now they were nit picking and talking about attempts to evacuate the city to no avail.
"Stark! Are we boring you again?" Fury asks, startling the teen out of his daze and causing him to turn from the unused fireplace.
"He's not bored. He's just thinking about how you kidnapped him." Beck quips.
Fury ignores the other man. "What's your job?"
"I'm to sit on the cathedral tower and look for the fire Elemental, and radio you guys when it arrives. When it arrives, that's when Mr.Beck and I will--"
"My name is Mysterio." Beck interrupts and shoots Peter a look of amusement who laughs a little awkwardly.
"Okay then, Mysterio and I will move in." Peter finishes.
"Look Peter, your best bet, only bet, is to stop it here. You can lead the civilians away but most importantly, don't let it near metal. Otherwise it will grow, and if it gets big enough, it can draw energy from Earth's core."
"Look, I don't want to put my friends in danger."
"You're afraid of us bringing danger to your classmates when you're the one who called in a drone strike on your class tour bus?! Tony gave you a multi million dollar weapon interface and that was what you did? That makes me think you're not ready."
Peter already knew what he did was wrong even though it was an accident, and he didn't need Nick Fury calling him out on it. At least Beck seemed to be on his side. He probably felt bad that they had dragged Peter away from his summer vacation if he was sassing the ex-director of SHIELD. Usually people who did that had a death wish...or they were Tony Stark.
Hell, Peter had sassed him back in Venice, but the teen didn't have a death wish no matter what his parents thought. They always said he looked for trouble when, for once, he didn't this time. Trouble found him and he had tried to get out of it.
Now he found himself fighting off Elementals with a wannabe magic user and previous members of SHIELD, and only one person out of that group bothered to show him some kindness and empathy. Beck made all of the trouble Fury was putting him through, just a little bit bearable. He didn't want to worry his parents because Fury was right. One was still recovering and another had enough to deal with.
Beck was the one who found him sitting on the roof later on. "Nick Fury asked me to come up here. See how you were doing. He felt bad about snapping at you."
Peter looks up at the floating man. "Really?"
"...you guys do have sarcasm on this earth right?" The teen laughs half-heartedly. He should have known better. "How are you feeling?"
Peter huffs out a sigh. "I didn't think I would need to save the world this summer. I know that makes me sound like such a jerk...I just...wanted a break from the superhero stuff. Not have a reason for my parents to worry. I can't even say anything to them because they deserve the rest."
Beck floats down and sits next to him. "You're not a jerk for wanting a normal life kid. It's a hard path." The elder looks over at him. "I like you Peter. You're a good kid. One part of me wants to tell you to run away and ignore this, but the other part knows what we're fighting. What's at stake. For now though, you worry about your friends."
Peter nods. "Yeah...see you out there." Peter jumps down from the roof, landing a few feet behind an elderly couple he startles. "Scusi...sorry...that's Italian. God, I'm so glad Dad isn't here. He would never let me hear the end of it."
___________________________
Once Peter managed to get his class tickets to the opera and slipped out, he changes into the stealth suit Fury gave him and climbs up to the cathedral tower. It was a good place to look out for the fire elemental, although he didn't think it would be hard to miss. He scopes the carnival from the top before flipping down to a ledge, landing in a crouch and confirming that he's in position.
"How's the suit?" Fury asks over the comm.
"Uh...the suit's great. It's awesome. It's a little tight around the old web shooter though."
"Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" The ex-director asks.
"I don't kiss my mother."
"It's a good thing. Might ruin that maternal side you drilled into Strange." Fury says sarcastically.
Peter rolls his eyes and it only took a couple more minutes for the elemental to show up. It destroyed a statue in the process, and the teen immediately tells Mysterio. The man swoops in and holds it back with his green mist while Peter jumps over to the building across the way to web a nearby fire hydrant and yank it out of the ground. The water sprays the monster, unfortunately not doing a thing except anger it, and Peter has to flip away from the punch it throws. He lands on the carousel, having precious seconds to avoid another punch, which he barely did since it sent him flying to the ground and into a wall.
When he looked up, he was horrified to find that it was absorbing the metal of the children's ride. He warns Beck about it as the monster grows bigger, and he suddenly hears a shout and looks up to find Ned and Betty stuck in the tilted ferris wheel. In a panic, he shoots his webs at the elemental, only for fire to burn them all the way down to his wrists as the monster approaches and Mysterio flies over just in time to hold up a misty shield.
"Plan B?!" The man shouts over the guttural roars and Peter pats the flames out on his arms.
"Yeah! We gotta hit it with something it can't absorb!"
Beck pushes the monster away with his shield to give them the split second they need to go their ways and Peter climbs a building to avoid more flames before flipping back, webbing a broken stone, and hurling it at the monster. Beck follows up with an attack of his own and they repeat the process until the elemental goes for the ferris wheel that his friends are still in. Mysterio holds it off just in time as Peter shoots some webs at the ride, only for the webs to hit something invisible.
What the hell?
He pulls back and whatever he had was thrown back into an alley, but he had to return his attention to saving his friends. Mysterio wouldn't be able to hold the monster back for long, so Peter tries webbing himself up again proceeds to connect the ride to the surrounding buildings to keep it up. As he plants himself against the wheel, Beck continues to fight the flaming monster until it gets backed up into metal and grows even bigger.
Peter's heart drops when Beck's fishbowl helmet falls away and the man looks toward the teen. "Whatever happens...I'm glad we met."
"Beck! No! What are you doing?!"
The helmet forms back over his head. "What I should have done before."
The teen continues to yell to the man in an attempt to stop him, but Beck starts to overpower himself with magic before flying right into the elemental's chest. It did the trick, destroying it and sending out a shockwave of green mist, and when everything cleared, Peter secures the ferris wheel when he spots the man's body on the ground. He jumps down and approaches the motionless body with his heart hammering in his chest, and heaves out a sigh of relief when Beck looks up at him.
"Oh thank god." Peter says as he helps the man to his feet.
Fury and Hill talk to Beck after that, confirming that was the last of the Elemental threat and ask him to join them in Berlin for possible future threats. He also asked Peter, but thankfully didn't ask for an answer right then and there. Fury gave him the choice. Turn him down and finish his vacation, or actually commit to be an Avenger that his father had made him all those years ago? Before the teen could really give it some thought though, Beck invited him for a drink and took him to a bar even though Peter had said he wasn't old enough (something else Tony would probably laugh about because of the honesty). Peter takes off his mask before the enter the bar and orders a lemonade, lazily sipping at the straw as he let his thoughts wander.
"Fury was right. You've got gifts." Beck says.
Peter rubs his eyes. "Dad has done a lot for me. I owe it to him and everyone else."
The elder tilts his head to look at the teen. "Do you?"
Peter sits up a little and looks at his hands. "Yeah. Of course." He replies instantly. "He's helped me through so much, he took me in when I had nowhere else to go after my Aunt May died, and even Mom has stepped into a role I accidentally gave him. Doing this so they can sit down for more than five minutes is the least I can do."
"Okay...but what do you want?"
"What do you mean?"
"What do you want?" Beck repeats. "Right now. I know you're thinking about--"
Peter stands up fully and turns toward Beck. "I want to finish my summer vacation...and be able to go home like a normal kid for once. Spend time with my parents and...and with my girlfriend freely. Her dad is an Avenger too and almost as overprotective as my mom is of me." Beck chuckles and the teen blushes. "Shut up man."
One of the employees approaches them and bends over briefly to pick up the EDITH glasses and returns them to Peter. He hadn't even realized that he dropped them in the first place. Beck asks about them before having Peter try them on, and the man stares.
"Can I be completely honest with you?" The man says.
"Please."
"...you look really stupid. Maybe there's a contact version of them."
Peter yanks the glasses off and holds them out to Beck. "You try them on then."
The man laughs and refuses at first but the vigilante insists and Quentin finally puts them on. Peter looks away when it only reminds him of Tony and he starts to doubt himself. Why would his father give him multi million dollar glasses that controlled weapons as a just in case? Tony was always griping about how he could barely handle the functions of his suit, so maybe Beck was better off with the glasses.
Peter laughs shortly. "Maybe you're better off having them."
"What? I'm not following. How many lemonades have you had?"
"I'm serious." The teen sighs out. "I don't know what my dad was thinking when he gave me those and Fury was right. I'm not ready for them."
Beck sighs and takes off the glasses before sliding them across the counter and back to Peter. "Come on Peter..."
The teen says nothing and puts the glasses back on, asking EDITH to change the controls over to Beck. Mysterio had more experience and was a born leader, so handing the glasses over to him felt like the right choice. The right thing. When he confirms his choice after some argument from the elder man, he hands the glasses back over to Mysterio.
"Welcome to the Avengers." Peter says.

Arawynn in Prague Day 3
Today was once again stuffed full to the limit. And the most unwelcome companion I had was a muscle ache in both calves from walking so much yesterday. After another mediocre breakfast (the croissants were okay, the apple cake was good, the apple slices had little taste to them but at least weren’t sour) we once again went exploring in the City of Prague.
Our first stop was Hamleys - a huge toyshop on 3 floors. I guess we spent an hour in there. Mum found a beautiful puzzle of the Prague Charles Bridge she loves but of course didn’t buy. I absolutely plan to get back to Hamleys tomorrow (with support from my sister and her boyfriend in order not to get lost) and buy it for her as Christmas present.
After that, we once again used the tram to get to a different shopping center - the Palladium. It has five floors full of shops, two of the shops are underground and the top floor is nothing but a bunch of restaurants. It seemed like we could get food from whichever nation we wanted - McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Japanese Sushi, at least two more Asian restaurants, Pizza and I certainly forget a couple more.
My sister and her boyfriend went exploring on their own while I preferred to stay with mum and dad. More or less the first store we went to was a bookstore. My family knows very well I’m a book nerd. I spent most of the time in the Foreign Books section (since the other 90% of books was Czech and I don’t understand anything of it) where they had English (certainly the biggest part of that section), Russian and even some German books.
I found a book from Randal Munroe, who wrote a favourite book of mine that I own in English AND in German (the English version is way better. It was also the first English book I didn’t buy because of school.) I didn’t start reading it, but I just couldn’t pass the chance to get the book. I’m incorrigible when it comes to buying books.
Two times during our exploration of the Palladium, we met my sister and her boyfriend. Randomly. When the three of us had finished our tour around the shopping mall, we drove up to the restaurant floor and got ourselves cappuccino (my parents) and a hot chocolate (me) in one of the two coffees (there are two of the shops I forgot...) After that (we’ve been aiming for 2 hours after which we’d meet again) we left the Palladium.
What follows was a bit of a mess because my sister wanted to go to the “dancing house” - a house that’s simply oddly shaped. And mum wanted to see a building close to the dancing house. We took a tram but of course the one that was going to the wrong direction. So we left at the next station.
Then - since we were close to the subway - we decided to take the subway because it had a station that was perfect for where we wanted to go. Prague has exactly 3 subway lanes - A, B and C. They meet at one point and otherwise they go in entirely different directions. At “our” station, two of them crossed each other - I say crossed not met because they drove on entirely different subway depths. And of course ours was the one deep deep underground. The moving stairs were long and steep.
It took us quite a bit of searching to find the subway entrance and more searching until we reached our platform. At least the subway came only 2 minutes later. The leaving of the subway station that’s been our goal was an adventure as well since the highest part of the station was right below a rather big intersection and the subway station was the only way to get across the street. And of course we were at the wrong one at first.
At least finding the dancing house and the building mum wanted to see was no problem. We then went to some tram station nearby and returned to our hotel for a 2 hour break.
At 4.20 (dad once again was impatient -.-) we left for a restaurant once again near their old hotel mum really wanted to eat at. It was surprisingly empty (also in contrast to yesterday’s restaurant that was stuffed full) but the food was once again very delicious. I had beef stroganoff with white boletus and basmati parsley rice. A little too hot for my taste, but I really loved it.
After dinner, we again went through the city (by now a bunch of spots is pretty familiar though navigating is still difficult due to the many little roads). After looking through at least 3 of the tiny souvenir shops I found a snow globe with the St. Vitus Cathedral that I really wanted and a really cool pullover with a crest (not sure if it’s the town’s crest of Prague of the one of Czech Republic) that I had seen before we’ve been to Hanleys. We had seen the crest on different pullovers earlier, but the one I wanted was light grey and the other ones were either dark grey or dark blue and I liked the light grey one best.
The downside of finding both is that now I don’t have a pleaded reason to return to Hanleys (where they also had snow globes I liked) and the store with the pullover.
At like half past 8 (an hour ago) we were back at the hotel - all of us tired and with the metaphorical flat feet from walking basically the entire day.

festival magic + my top 5 films seen at this year’s KVIFF
ahoj all, i’ve been in the middle of summer camps (sotiredomg) just wanted to pop in after our annual trip to karlovy vary for the film festival. even if it took me all dang week to finish this post.
in case you’re new around here: hi, i’m cynthia and i like to have film festival vacations in beautiful hilly spa towns where we get up at 6am to go stand in box office queues!
joking aside, we're getting into a real routine when it comes to this festival, but the most notable change this year is when we arrived to the box office on thursday shortly after getting in, we bought our friday tickets and then were asked if we would like to also purchase saturday tickets as well. normally this does not happen, as you're only allowed to buy tickets for that day and the next, but thanks to this little change, we had only two early mornings of queuing! it was incredible. lots of sleep, a good amount of relaxation.
this year was a little different too as we both agreed to only see three films a day instead of four or even five. i know this might seem like crazy talk to anyone who has not attended a film festival, but when our vacation is solely based around going to the festival... you see movies. i have found, however, that more than three films a day is too much. even though you might have the time in your schedule, by the fourth movie you're just sort of ready to go home and also not very able to synthesize and think and discuss the films. (the same reason why i never binge-watch tv shows)
so, three films a day it was. another change that we just figured out and will implement next time is actually spreading those three films over the entire day rather than watching the films, for example: at 13:00, then 16:00, and finally 19:00. this was our schedule for about two days of the festival and even though we had the morning to relax, it was rather difficult finding the time to power-walk across town to the next theater or barely having time to even grab a sandwich on the way.
every year gets more and more laid-back, and learning these little tweaks make it all the more enjoyable. besides the films themselves, i enjoyed (as ever!) trying all the different waters from the various prameny (springs) with my little ceramic sippy-cup (very characteristic of the spa-triangle region of the czech republic). on the hottest day of the year so far, sunday the 30th, we took a lovely walk in the forest south of the city right after buying our tickets that morning and it was such a nice way to have a break from sitting in the kino. we walked along a trail called the goethova stezka, and it was just really lovely. there are just countless trails around karlovy vary and i love exploring a new area every year.
i also really enjoyed the photography exhibition on the first floor of hotel thermal, hanging out at the various pop-up lounges (like the mall.cz and ceska televize zones), and seeing my picture in the festival denik newspaper (above) one morning. who would've thunk. my biggest twitter moment since the time that michael b. jordan retweeted me. just let me bask in my fame... for one more minute. (megan rapinoe pose)
on the last night in vary after we got out of our last screening (a new german film, systemsprenger) at národní dům, we walked back from masaryka street towards our flat near karlovy vary theater and the sky was just the most beautiful rosy, peachy hue. it was like magic was blanketing the city - so romantic. we found a wine bar nestled in a little alley and toasted to the start of july with glasses of prosecco. it seemed like one of those "european magic" moments, the sort of moment i remember from before i moved to europe. the sort of situation that makes you want to live there. a great end to a great festival.
lunch of the festival: one of the bowls from lékárna (above), all the way up at masaryka 47 . after male bistro apparently closed earlier this year and baguette boulevard has long left the vary scene (sniffle), my tummy was aching for some veggie-friendly health food and lékárna certainly filled the void. the spicy chickpea bowl with their house tahini, veggies and other deliciousness kept me going through a long travel day.
without any further ado, my top five films seen! i can highly recommend any one of these films if you get the chance to see them in the next year...
5) jan palach (2018, czech republic)
i feel like this film is basically a must-see especially for foreigners living in the czech republic who require a bit more background to fully take in what happened with jan palach during the prague spring (soviet invasion) of 1968. was very cool to get to see the cast and crew of the film as well at this screening.
4) a white, white day (2019, iceland)
if you have seen any icelandic films, you would know the brilliant ingvar sigurdsson (above) who kills it in this film like all the rest. the story takes place in a remote icelandic town - deals with love, loss, stages of grieving, pain manifesting in anger and destruction, and more. it’s got to be the best icelandic film of the year. the little girl who plays the granddaughter really makes the film, as well.
3) stitches (2019, serbia)
did you know that between the 1970′s and now, serbia has been dealing with a newborn-kidnapping crisis? this conspiracy (who is doing this?!) that the government would rather like to keep under wraps has been surfacing in recent years, and that’s generally what this movie is about: a mother (a seamstress) who will stop at nothing to find her kidnapped son, stolen from her at birth and sold to another couple by hospital personnel eighteen years before. it starts slow but certainly builds and has you hanging on every moment.
2) monos (2019, columbia)
i had a hunch this film would be good and it surpassed even my high expectations. basically, it’s a loose lord of the flies scenario: eight kids, conscripted into the military are holding court on a stunning mountaintop living a life virtually away from all adults and are expected to watch over one milk cow... and one hostage: a forty-something american doctor. i don’t know what else to tell you about this one besides just “see it”, it’s brilliant and nearly devoid of flaws.
1) parasite (2019, south korea)
another banger from bong joon-ho (did we actually expect anything else?) of previous films like the host, snowpiercer, and 2017′s okja. parasite somehow manages to be even more epic than those three. the director himself even stated that the less information you have going into the screening, the better and i’d have to agree, but prepare for what is a drama, thriller and comedy all in one. it premiered at cannes this year and won the palme d’or so that’s sort of saying something. look out for this one!
see you next year, karlovy vary! and see the rest of you next week.
ps, past KVIFF accounts can all be seen here! it’s a lifestyle.

Wellness Traveling Sees Increase in Demand
Before March 2020, the Global Wellness Institute reported that wellness tourism expanded considerably since 2015. According to a BBC Travel article written in February 2020, the Wellness Tourism market had grown 6.5 percent from $563 billion to $639 billion between 2015 and 2017. Projections for this sector of travel were projected to reach $919 billion and represent 18 percent of global tourism in 2022, but for the pandemic beginning in March 2020. In 2021, the travel sector recovered, but wellness tourism is reportedly bouncing back. Wellness tourism refers to travel that is associated with maintaining or enhancing health. There are primary wellness travelers within wellness tourism motivated solely by wellness goals. Secondary wellness travelers strive to maintain wellness or participate in wellness activities as a part of their vacation. The figures reveal that interest in this sector is climbing while temporarily halted in 2020 and parts of 2021. Between 2019 and 2020, the wellness tourism market plummeted from $720.4 billion to $435.7 billion, and while there are no figures for 2021, it is forecasted to grow at an annual growth rate of 20.9 percent between 2020 and 2025. These figures are no surprise when a fusion of two of the most profitable industries, wellness and tourism, comes together. Not only are people becoming interested in wellness travel, but they are also willing to pay more to travel to destinations offering wellness as a part of respite. The average tourist going on a wellness vacation pays 130 percent more than the average travel. Domestic wellness travelers pay 150 percent more than a domestic traveler, and international wellness travelers pay 65 percent more than the average international traveler. In 2020, the domestic wellness traveler spent $619 per trip, 177 percent more than the domestic traveler. Finally, international wellness travelers spent $1,601 per trip, which added to them spending 35 percent more than the standard international traveler. Most of the people who take these trips pay a little more to enjoy a vacation where wellness takes center stage. According to the December 2021 Forbes article, travelers tend to be more affluent, well-educated, and well-traveled. This population is willing to forgo the extra cash to enjoy a vacation that will have positive health impacts. One of the most notable places in the United States is greater Palm Springs, home to nine different cities with countless spas and mineral-springs hotels. The location offers the outdoors, natural beauty, recreation, and relaxation to visitors outside of these wellness diversions. In Europe, Budapest, Hungary is home to one of the most famous thermal spas. Tuscany also offers travelers the chance to revive themselves at one of Italy’s leading spa resorts. Lisbon, Portugal, is also experiencing a spike in wellness tourism. Visitors can seek rejuvenation at places like the Float in Spa, which contains an advanced floating system for serenity relaxation. If travelers want to have the whole experience, consider Prague in the Czech Republic. Here, visitors can find themselves submerged in Vitamin B and anti-oxidant-rich nectar at a local beer spa. Alternatively, they can find themselves in a hyperbaric chamber breathing in oxygen-rich air. Other places of interest in Europe include Morocco (hiking) and the Italian Rivera (sailing).

JAYE JAYLE'S 'NO TRAIL AND OTHER UNHOLY PATHS' IS OFFICIALLY RELEASED TODAY VIA SARGENT HOUSE;
Extensive worldwide tour dates with Emma Ruth Rundle announced for this Fall.
"...a devilish meeting of spirits that feels like being adrift at sea, awed by the beauty but a little scared about how you’re getting home.” - PASTE MAGAZINE
"That Lynchian darkness is on full display... along with a sizable helping of Nick Cave-ian heaviness. The song unfurls like the gnarled roots of an old oak, burrowing its way into your skull through its hypnotically unrelenting repetition.” - STEREOGUM
"The dark Americana storytelling qualities in the music of Jaye Jayle… bare something very Lynchian, but also completely original too.” - DESTROY/EXIST
"...I will probably never shut up telling anyone within earshot to pick this up and lose themselves in its many folds and terrifying trails and hallways. And even though there are many hidden markers and signs left by others, there really isn’t anything like this. Not even the bits you think you know.” - ECHOES & DUST
"Although bereft of crashing noise ‘No Trail…’ is luscious, emotional, dirty, despairing, and brings a host of influences into a melting pot of diseased loneliness and hedonism the like of which Dorian Gray would revel in. Emotive, cold, utterly fantastic.” - GHOST CULT
No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, the wickedly original new album from Jaye Jayle is officially released today via Sargent House, and is now streaming in its entirety. Jaye Jayle are also supporting Emma Ruth Rundle on forthcoming live dates that were announced this week alongside new album news - see the full listings below.
JAYE JAYLE'S NEW ALBUM, NO TRAIL AND OTHER UNHOLY PATHS NOW STREAMING VIA SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC
Produced by Dean Hurley, David Lynch’s music supervisor of the last twelve years, No Trail And Other Unholy Paths has transcended the album format, elevating itself to a choose-your-own-adventure experience. Patterson notes that the album bears no specific beginning or ending—Side A and Side B are meant to be interchangeable. The album could open with the fluttering instrumental “No Trail,” or the slow burning synths of “As Soon As Night,” even the spectral push-pull of “Marry Us,” featuring partner Emma Ruth Rundle’s spellbinding vocals. Regardless of track sequencing, No Trail And Other Unholy Paths is an album that drives its aural dimensions to the absolute threshold — and then some.
No Trail And Other Unholy Paths is available now via Sargent House here.

Dancing House Prague: Postmodern Hotel
Dancing House is a unique example of postmodern architecture where is located within the centre of Prague, on the eastern side of Jiráskův most bridge. Construction of the Dancing House was completed between 1992 and 1996. The name of the Dancing House is coming from the very famous Hollywood couple; Fred Astaire and Ginder Rogers. They were the most famous couple of who were dancing together during the 1930s. However, Dancing House is not a place to just go and see, it is also a world-wide famous hotel to stay during your time in Prague.
Dancing House Prague: Postmodern Architecture
On the construction site of the Dancing House, there was a building from the 19th century which has the effect of the Renaissance movement. But this building was collapsed and demolished during World War II. On the same site of this building, the officials of Prague decided to build a new and modern building by the ING Bank from Holland. At first, ING Bank meets with Jean Nouvel and offered him to build a new and modern building on the site he refused this offer. He told the ING Bank that the area of the construction site was too small for his thoughts. Later on, they met and agreed with Frank Gehry. ING Bank wanted to create both symbols for the bank and Prague. So, they give an unlimited budget to Frank Gehry. With this freedom, Frank Gehry had a chance to put on the table his deconstructivist ideas.
Dancing House Hotel consist of two bodies; glass tower and wavy structure (Source). Structural Properties of House As you can see from the image above, Dancing House consists of two different bodies or structure. The first one is a glass tower supported by inclined columns. The second one has a wavy structure that runs parallel to the Vltava river. These wavy shapes and windows created with mould and also they didn't line up linearly. This style gives a moving effect on the building itself. The house consists of 99 concrete panels and each of the located differently from each other. In addition to concrete panels, precast concrete, steel and glass material were also used during the construction. On top of the building, you can see a twisted metal structure. Its name is Medusa, created by covering the metals bars with a metal mesh layer.
Medusa of the House designed by the Frank Gehry (Source). There are cafes on the ground floor of the house. You can directly reach to the Vltava river and the square from the ground floor. There are offices areas from the 2nd floor to the 7th. On the top floor of the Dancing House, there is restaurant with a panoramic view of Prague. I think, eating a meal at the Dancing House Hotel Restaurant on the top floor would be a nice surprise for loved one :)
Where is the Dancing House?
The house is located a bit south from the important places of Prague's Old and New Town. If you like to walk around the cities like me, you can follow this route to go to the Dancing House. From the Stare Mesto, an inspection point of the Clementinum and eastern side of Charles Bridge, just follow the Smetanovo nábř. along the eastern side of the Vltava river for 1.5 km. This route is quite nice and enjoyable to walk. On the route, you will see Bedrich Smetana Museum, Prague Beer Museum, Krannerova kašna, National Theatre, Žofín Palace and more, what a route to walk! When you come closer to the Jiráskovo náměstíi tram station you will see the Dancing House! If you want to use public transport take a look below to see your options; Karlovo náměstí metro station: Line B (Yellow) Jiráskovo náměstí tram station: Lines 5, 17 Jiráskovo náměstí bus station: Lines 176, 907, 910
Dancing House Tour and Ticket
As I mentioned above, Dancing House is also an active hotel where you can stay during your time in Prague. Even if you are staying in the hotel there are some tours to worth to join the discover the house itself. For example, you can join Prague: Dancing House Gallery and Rooftop Entrance Tour to discover the house in a very different and a unique way. During the tour, you will have a chance to access to the permanent and temporary exhibition on the gallery and access to the rooftop terrace to enjoy the panoramic view or a meal at the restaurant. If you are looking for more different tours to join during your time in Prague please check the widget below to find more. If you ever visited the Dancing HouseHotel, Restaurant or Gallery please share your experiences and thoughts to help the people who are planning to go to Prague. Also, feel free to ask your question and give suggestion to improve the quality of this content! Enjoy! Read the full article

Five Reasons Let It Roll Winter May Be the Best Winter Festival in Europe and Is Definitely Worth the Trip [Gallery]
Over the past few years, Let It Roll in the Czech Republic has become known as the biggest drum & bass festival in the world, and with good reason. With massive lineups, art cars, ancillary shows and multiple stages, it’s basically Coachella for D&B heads. Thousands of US bassheads make the trek yearly to Let It Roll in the summer to get their fill of D&B; one can basically see all the top artists of the world in one blowout long weekend. No one would argue this massive party isn’t worth the trek.
The Let It Roll winter festival has been on just as long as the now main summer show, as they both started in the clubs in Prague in 2008 but, although it sells out every year and it a staple for European heads, it may be lesser known to US partiers. It’s nonetheless spectacular, however, and there are a number of reasons Let It Roll winter is also worth the trip.
youtube
The opening show: Let It Roll is well-known for its opening spectaculars each year at the summer festie, and winter’s show is just as good. This year when LIR descended on Prague, the line of fans was around the block early to see the opening show and it didn’t disappoint. With a heavy tribal theme in effect for 2020, the show included dancers, sick visuals, fireballs whipping off the stage and some intense music with a call to “awaken the sleeping gods” of bass.
The lineup: LIR winter is a one-stage affair but it’s nonetheless packed with D&B heroes from all over and covers the spectrum of subgenres. This year, for example, Andy C and Wilkinson headlined Friday and Saturday, respectively and they were flanked by the likes of The Prototypes, Hybrid Minds, Black Sun Empire, Prolix, Kasra, Kanine, Friction, Kove and Turno. Local heroes Forbidden Society and Rido also bookended Saturday’s festivities, showing that the Czech Republic isn’t just a venue for good D&B, it’s a progenitor.
The venue: Winter festivals are tricky in Europe of course, because largely they can’t be outdoors. While winters in Czechia tend to be on the milder side, promoters don’t want to take the chance so they found a venue right downtown that worked perfectly this year. Well-structured and looking a bit like the Thunderdome, revelers could dance on the main floor or on one of the mezzanines. Crowds at LIR tend to be a little crazy but traffic seemed to flow easily and everyone stayed safe.
The stage design: With only one set to design in the winter show, the Let It Roll team really go out. This year the stage was set with lush, sort of tribal decor and flanked by two giant totems whose eyes not only glowed and moved but were, in fact, LED displays so they changed color, size and structure; sometimes they looked human, other times like animals and still others, not of this world. The afore-mentioned fireballs were set off throughout the show along with an impressive laser show and the tribal theme extended out into the crowd with vines hanging from the ceiling. It made for a heady, Bacchanalian festival that impressed as much with sight as with sound.
The City: Prague is sincerely one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is a functional ancient city, with almost every building and hotel having some kind of history. During the day, partiers literally needed walk no further than five minutes from the venue to run smack into a medieval cathedrals and with safe, easy public transport, lots of other wonders are easy to access as well, like the Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the city’s multiple famous museums.
With Let It Roll winter in the can this year, those who attended can now only sigh and look forward to the summer festival July 30-August 1 but that’s nothing to sneeze at, as the lineup this year may possibly be the biggest one. Heads in Europe can also find Let It Roll on tour to bridge the gap but for US punters, even with the massive lineup of summer, once per year may not be enough. With less crowding, fresh visuals and a lineup that’s insane for a one-stage party, it’s definitely time for die hard D&B fans to “Let It Roll” on into winter and not miss out on the best place for drum & bass.
